Founded in 1640, the University of Helsinki today is a vivid, international scientific community of 40,000 students and researchers. We are Finland’s most important provider of research infrastructures and a significant institution on the European scale. The university allocates considerable resources (funding, staff, facilities) to its research infrastructures every year. FACULTIES
The University of Helsinki is an international academic community with more than 40,000 students and members of staff. It operates on four campuses in Helsinki and in 9 other localities in Finland. The University’s 11 faculties are home to many departments. Furthermore, the University accommodates several independent research-oriented institutes, multidisciplinary research networks and campus units, as well as units attending to duties of a national authority. The University of Helsinki enjoys great visibility and influence all around Helsinki and in the rest of Finland.

The strategic research areas for 2017–2020 include life sciences, the human mind in a changing world as well as the structure of matter and materials science. The University of Helsinki has four doctoral schools, which offer a total of 32 doctoral programmes.
LIVING IN HELSINKI
Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is a vibrant seaside city of beautiful islands and great green parks. It inhabits approdimately o.6 million people and offers a great deal of design, architecture, culture, shopping and restaurants. Helsinki’s public transportation system is highly efficient although the central city is easily explored on foot, too. The greater capital area consists of the cities of Espoo, Helsinki, Kaunianen and Vantaa and has some 1.1 million residents and a multitude of opportunities for good living, working and enjoying life in Finland.
