The Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry at the Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden e.V. offers a
Position for a
in the area of MALDI mass spectrometry imaging (MSI).
The Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden e. V. (IPF) is one of the largest European research institutes on polymers and carries out fundamental as well as application-oriented research. Dresden is an important R&D hub and the city with the highest density of research institutions in Germany. The TU Dresden is distinguished by the Excellence Initiative of the German government. Independent research institutions, e.g. from the Leibniz and Helmholtz Associations or the Max Planck and Fraunhofer Societies cover all aspects from fundamental to applied research. Close collaborations exists between all partners, creating a highly dynamic environment and the opportunity for cutting-edge and high-impact research.
Field of activity:
MALDI MSI is a recently developed imaging technique with high potential to become a standard imaging tool in medical, pharmaceutical and biological research. The method is label-free and allows to visualize the spatial distribution of molecules in a tissue sample to create molecular maps of tissue types, and is therefore particularly interesting for tumor diagnosis and research.
The offered position is part of an interdisciplinary and international collaboration targeting the chemical as well as computational restraints which currently limit the scope of MALDI MSI. The focus of the partners at the Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden e. V. (IPF) will be the development and evaluation of new matrix materials, while the KAUST’s Visual Computing Center (VCC) will develop computational methods to interpret, visualize and classify the obtained data. The institution granting the Ph.D. degree is the Technical University (TU) Dresden.
The project covers three areas:
(1) Organic synthesis of novel matrix materials
(2) Material characterization and analysis
(3) MALDI mass spectrometry and MALDI mass spectrometry imaging
- Master or equivalent degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, bioengineering or related areas
- solid background in chemistry, chemical engineering, bio-engineering or related areas. Hands-on experience in organic synthesis and/or analytics is required.
- Experience in mass spectrometry is a bonus.
The salary is planned as a ¾ position E13 TV-L over one year (Start: 01.07.2017) duration of the project but can be adjusted to personal needs.
